I would guess aniline wax or oil…
From pictures it looks like its Aniline Wax Pull-up type; you may send me higher resolution picture to help you post for positive identification.
Tackiness in some spots more intense than others…
This is most likely due to alkalinity over exposure; especially when alkalinity products were used without neutralizing it to the pH neutral of leather between 3 and 5. During storage moisture may be attracted by these spots more than others and reactivate the working of the residue that produce this pH phenomenal in stickiness. To rectify it to a healthy squeaky feel requires the work of a Acidifier-2.0 (pH 2.0).
Also, the leather seemed to be unusually dry.
This dryness is due to the diminishing of the original fatliquor. The fatliquor in the leather structure is the lifeblood of leather, when new from tannery would have an average of 14%. This moisture content imparts softness, suppleness and strength to the leather. However it evaporates as VOC (volatile organic compound) sooner or later depending on the environment. To rectify this problem would require to be rejuvenated with Hydrator-3.3 (pH 3.3) follows with Fatliquor-5.0 (pH 5.0). Besides the primary rejuvenator, the wax effect requires the secondary rejuvenator using Wax Effect-8.6 to restore the structure pull-up effect and the surface covered with white powdery wax crystal when dry after 4 hours to be activated by heat to create its natural waxy luster characteristic.
Then I generously applied the conditioner and massaged it in using my hands. I may have been too generous, because when I was finished and the conditioner had set in, the leather seemed too buttery and soft. This is particularly true on the seat cushions as they don't have the buttons that hold the leather taught. It almost feels like you could stretch the leather with your hands. It feels loose, and I wonder if it has, in fact, become stretched.
The conditioner used may contain oils that have dissolved the secondary wax effect; that deviated from the original characteristic. You may test out other areas with a leather-safe system for comparison: Acidifier-2.0 > Cleaner-3.8 > Rinse-3.0 > Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 > Wax Effect-8.6 > Leather Scent-D.
Like it was impregnated with wax.
Wax Effect-8.6 restores this wax pull-up characteristic, besides it will restore all those fingernail scratches too; always returning to a darkening shade for it to becomes alive again, once it is been sat on but rarely the same texture shade – just like the scenery of the moving clouds - that’s why it’s so popular with designer…
