View Full Version : Aniline (Sauvage) - Waterline: How to rectify flood damaged waterline on an aniline wax pull-up leather sectional?

Dear Forum,

The sectional below was involved in a flood where water was about 6 inches high.

Additional water was wicked up by the leather to the point where a visible water line can be seen.

The couch cushions were not damaged.

Surprisingly, the leather below the water line looks almost normal...maybe slightly darker in color...but only slightly.

The real issue is the water line that looks like a slightly raised scar on the sectional, and it goes all the way around the back from arm to arm.

The leather has a wax pull-up finish, and is a brand new sectional.

It is roughly 10ft by 7ft.

Hopefully the photos will show you what I am trying to explain....this is my first time posting, so I apologize if this is not done correctly.

Also, as a homeowner (and not a leather restorer), if you let me know first whether this is something I should tackle...and second, if it is something I can do...please take that into consideration when you post the directions.

In a water damaged situation the source of water will determine the scope of restoration.

In the IICRC S500, 2nd Edition: the source of water is defined as:

Category 1 water:
Water originating from a source not poses substantial harm to human (also referred to as “clean water”).

Category 2 water:
Water containing a significant degree of chemical, biological and/or physical contamination and having the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans (also referred to as “gray water).

Category 3 water:
Grossly unsanitary water; containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contamination water sources and having the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans.
This category includes all forms of seawater, ground surface water and rising water from rivers or streams (also referred to as “black water”).

Where damaged is caused by either Cat 2 or 3, decontamination and controlling microorganism is a major consideration.

Besides leather has its own chemistry that are affected and some of its constituents have break bonds that contributes to the slightly raised scar.

So the scope of work would involve:

1. Decontamination:
2. Controlling of future microbial amplification:
3. Stabilizing the leather pH chemistry integrity:
4. Restoring the original constituent leather structure make up of Aniline Wax Pull-Up Leather.
5. Rectify the waterline scar.
6. Restoring the surface appearance.

Restoration Resources:

1. Manpower - One.
2. Supplies - Latex-Gloves, leatherBrush1™, 3” PolyBrush®, leatherEraser4™, Cling-Wrap-Plastic-Sheet, Rags, stake70™, razor60™, etc.
3. Equipment - Steady Arm

Products Recommendation:
1. Decontamination - d’Oil4.4™ > clean3.8™ > rinse3.0™.
2. Neutralize Alkaline Exposure - acidifier2.0™.
3. Biocide - d’Bacteria3.7™.
4. Fungicide - d’Mold3.6™.
5. Rectify the Waterline Scar - relaxer3.3™.
6. Replenish Fatliquor - fatliquor5.0™.
7. Revive Wax Pull-Up Effect - waxEffect95™.
8. Topcoat Auxiliary - adhesion73™.
9. Topcoat Refinishes - anilineTop54S™.
10. Aniline Wax Pull-Up Conditioner - leatherScent’D™.

Among the above procedures that requires patience and skill is the one to undo the waterline scar.
The rest is pretty straight forward as products come with mini-trigger sprayer.

You the owner is to decide, whether you would like to do it yourself.

The How will be follow depending on your priority.

What do you think?

Hi Roger - Well...I am game to try to do the restoration myself.

I think what I would like to do is to do a test run on either one section, or on the side that connects up with the corner piece...as it is a hidden side, and possibly a good test location. The section is made up of three pieces, the long couch, the corner unit, and the shorter couch sections.

The scar in the picture is most pronounced on the left side of the long couch...it can hardly be seen on the right hand side of the shorter couch....strange the reaction was different.

Let me know what happens next....

Thanks!

You still need the desired products to do your testing.

Just email me what you need.

That will make things start happening…
