View Full Version : How do I refinish this Chanel Grand Shopping Tote (White Caviar Pebbled Lambskin) bag into Black)?

Questions!

I have currently a white bag; I would like to dye it black?
What can I use?
I have attached a picture of the white bag currently, and another picture of how it’s meant to look when it’s dyed (Black).
This bag is not made of Lambskin but of Caviar.
Please do advise which dye I should purchase and which finish.
Regarding the absorbency, I tested with 2 drops of water, the water stayed on top so I wiped it off and it only absorbed where the water was but it didn't spread.
How much dye and Adhesor-73 do you think I would need?
What is the purpose of the Adhesor-73?
Is there any dye which doesn't scratch to reveal the white?

Leather Type:
Caviar, I believe is the embossing done to look like caviar. The leather if it is not from the sheep, it's probably from the bovine family; certainly not from a fish.

Leather Tanning Type:
This could possibly be aldehyde-tanned (white) leather types commonly used for baseball. It could be chrome-tanned as well, however it will have a grayish-blue hue on worn areas to indicate the two commonly tanning type for white leather. These worn areas will likely reoccur in the course of usage that will reveal the existing white finish.

Leather Finish Type:
The manufacturer would prefer to use the white leathers instead of the grayish-blue, so that cuts or scratches will be less obvious. Note that, when changing from white colored leather into black color; there is a high possibility that accidental scratches will reveal the whiteness beneath the micron layers of black pigment. It will also need more coating to shift from white to grey to black to the desired color intensity. Another consideration is not to over coat it, as it may look un-natural.

What is the purpose of the Adhesor-73?
Adhesor-73 is quite similar in function to sealer or undercoat in other form of paint coatings. It is to ensure that the color coat does not peel. It’s the go in-between the existing finish and the color coat.

Is there any dye which doesn't scratch to reveal the white?
Dyes are transparent; in this case we are using opaque pigment coating that will block out the base white color instead.
Eventually, with friction rubs or accidental scratches all leathers will wear especially edges. A crosslinker will strengthen the topcoat and that’s what is used to strengthen the leather especially in sports gear for ice hockey or motorcycle suits. Crosslinking the topcoat with Crosslinker-25 makes the leather non-coatable i.e. future refinish will not adhere to the crosslinked surfaced. It is also solvent resistant. Well, toughen the finishes too. To protect with a rub-resistant protection will also helps to reduce wear to the finish.

Regarding the absorbency, I tested with 2 drops of water, the water stayed on top so I wiped it off and it only absorbed where the water was but it didn't spread:
Your absorbency test indicates that the existing leather breathes; absorbency equals breathability. Normally with the same look but differ in the degree of leather breathability will also reflect the value of the item; with the more lively the leather is, the more expensive it is. The choice of the finish type is based on your findings and the Micro-Pigment-54 system matches it with choice of luster, be it gloss, satin or matte.

Note:
An option to remove the leather strap from the chain for easier color refinishing, rather remove it prior to cleaning.
If you wish one side removal would be sufficient, the end holding threads need to be undone and redo after complete refinishing.

What can I use?
1] Restoration Cleaning:
This is to remove foreign contamination that may hamper proper adhesion.
Prep-7.7 > Cleaner-3.8 > Rinse-3.0 (Eraser-4 + horsehair Brush-1 + towel)

2] Leather Rejuvenating:
This is to replenish original fatliquor diminish through evaporation as VOC (volatile organic compound).
Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0

3] Dry Prep:
Eraser-4 + Brush-1
Note: Fine sanding to remove existing finishes not recommended, fear frail or damages to the stitching.

4] Adhesion Coating:
This is similar to sealer coat or undercoating in other painting system.
Adhesor-73

5] Color Coating:
Micro-Pigment-54 (black 512) + Thickener-48 (optional) > Topcoat-72G (gloss) + Crosslinker-25
Note:
Micro-Pigment-54 is preferred over the standard Pigment-64 due to its finesse as the desired appearance is slowly built up.
Thicknener-48 is added to the color to control the flow, thus avoiding drips from vertical sections.
Gloss is tougher than either the satin or matte luster; the black caviar fashion leather from my experience is quite glossy that may match as well, still your choice.

6] Non-stick, rub-resistant, buttery-feel, leather-scented protection:
Protection-B+
