Hi,

I have owned a cheapish leather pouffe (standard coloured leather) for a couple of years and it has developed a number of sticky patches arounds the sides and on top (nothing has been spilt on it!). Are the patches caused by fungus or mould, or something else? Is there any way of getting rid of them?

If yours is the pigmented type; than the sticky patches may be foreign deposit or the leather may be exposed to some form of alkaline from body contact – that need to be pH balance with a pH 2.0 acidifier to return to a healthy squeaky feel.

If the patches is caused by fungus or mold; it would emit a musty suffocating smell; that may aggravates asthmatic problems – that need a leather-safe pH 3.6 fungicide antimicrobial treatment.

These are all guesses and probabilities; unless we see some pictures; we would not be able to recommend or suggest the appropriate procedure of getting rid of them.

Hi,
Thanks for the response - I've uploaded a few pics... had a bit of trouble with glare! Can you make a more firm diagnosis and suggestion from them?

This leather looks more like Aniline.

Can you take pictures of the reverse suede side especially the sticky areas to see if the stain or sticky is there too?

Is the leather equally absorbent on the problem areas and the non-problem areas?

Any sweaty smell?

Any know products used so far on it?

There is no sweaty smell... It was a bit tricky getting a picture of the back of the leather because of the way it is stuffed... hope the one I got is OK.

The picture on the reverse suede side looks clean.

We may follow what's recommended by this problem solving guide for Aniline to rectify the problem...

Four steps necessary to resolved tackiness problem with: Acidifier-2.0 > Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 > Leather Scent-B.

However foreign contamination need to be clean off first; depend on the soiling level and it's wiser to treated it as accumulated soiling that may require these sequence of steps: Prep-4.4 > Cleaner-3.8 > Rinse-3.0 prior to the above.
