I got a beautiful sheerling coat for Christmas, heavy and toasty warm.
It has a noticeable odor that I thought would go away after a while. After some research I discovered that most sheep skin leathers are tanned using the "chrome" process. As in Chromium Sulfate. I thought yep! sulfur, that's what she smells like. Cheap Hides???

I tried turning the coat inside out and liberally dowsing the wool with baking soda. I let it sit for over 24 hours, beat and vacuumed the baking soda out and it did very little to remove the odor.

Please somebody give me a solution for this.

Is yours a suede-shearling or a napa-shearling; is the smell coming from the wool inner face or the suede/napa outer-face?

Well it's not really a suede texture. When I bought it the description said "Genuine Merino Hides". It has kind of a natural appearance, kind of dull with visible grain and texture. Fairly soft. The smell seems to come more from the wool side. Has a kind of acidic odor that's not really repulsive, but not pleasant.
Hopefully you can see it in this link.
Thanks

How to remove acidic odor from the wool side of shearling?

It is recommended that it’s degreased and scent masking in this sequence:

A] Degreasing:
1] Using Wool Degreaser-5.6 to degrease.
2] Using Wool Cleaner5.5 to clean.
3] Using Wool Rinse-3.0 to rinse.
This non-immersion cleaning method is by spraying, agitation and extraction with terry towel until terry towel shows clean.

B] Masking:
1] Use Leather Scent-S (silky-feel)

Tips:
Wool seems to smell (acidic) more when it’s wet/damp than when it’s dry.

We shall walk you through when you have the products at hand.

The products mentioned can be found in this Kit-SK3 or as individual bottles.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering, do you have an explanation or guess as to why this wool smells, and do you feel confident that this process will do the trick?

Smells from the wool face is more likely from the wool glands that gives the typical smell; rather than from the smell of the chrome tanning process.

No different from our body, as our smell is derived from these sebaceous glands too.

Therefore, degreasing the wool effectively is the answer to removing the smell.
