Roger,
We have a client with a 3-1/2 year old Leather sofa. On one back panel the leather is peeling (like a sunburn) secondary color is coming off. The client doesn't remember getting anything on the leather to cause this, and it's not in a high use area.
What could cause this?
Do we think we can make a permanent repair?

Not defective!

The detective eyes have spotted the forgotten spills; that darkens the primary color.

These stain need to be removed; its either stays on top of a pigmented coating; or it’s penetrated into the aniline leather dyed crust.

Use a drop of Hydrator-3.3 to do the water testing to determine the primary finish type.

If Hydrator-3.3 penetrates use Degreaser-2.2 > Rinse-3.0 to remove the darkening stains.

If Hydrator-3.3 pools on the surface use Prep-7.7 > Cleaner-3.8 > Rinse-3.0 to remove the darkening stains.

Fatliquor-5.0 is necessary to replace fatliquor that may also be removed during the degreasing process.

Adhesor-73 is essential to assure a permanent repair – if you are providing a warranty – test it out will a 3M scotch-tape pull test.

Roger, I just sent you a swatch of the leather. I'm sure I'll only need 250ml, let me know what top coat I"ll need.

When you say 3m scotch tape test, are you talking about clear tape? press it on and peel it off or leave it on for a few minutes? How long after finish coat has been applied?

When cleaning this area, how aggressive should we be at removing old finish around these damaged areas. I also saw a smal spot to the left of the primary area in the picture.

Use the 2” wide 3M clear tape.

Do it what one normally does to tape up carton boxes and peel it off immediately.

When the in-between coats is dry before each application the finish will be stronger against this peeling test.

Bear in mind that this test is not a warranty against this unknown liquid damages; if it does occur again - it will still dissolved the secondary finish in the same like manner.

When the leather is further protected with the non-stick, rub-resistant protector – in this case the Leather Scent-B – any non solvent based sticky substance when removed has little change to cause a peeling to the new finish.

This is something what the customer should possess if this service comes with a warranty and it’s found in this Kit-SA.c

Follow my product recommendation mentioned earlier; thereafter fine sanding to feather out; in preparation for the refinishing.

Wet prep the entire panel accordingly and fine sanding wet at 1000grit; dry prep at 1500grit; avoid patchiness but with gradual feathering making the color coating easier.

Tips:

Finishes that is removed by physical action stays stronger especially when partial removal is more than adequate as in this case.

When using chemical action to dissolve the unwanted finish, it has to be 100% clean; otherwise building on already deteriorated partial removed finish will have poor adhesion.
