This is my husband's favourite chair, given as a gift from his uncle. The surface was already decaying at that time but we just covered it with a throw blanket. Now that I have some time on my hands I would like to go about stripping it back and preserving the leather in it's natural colouring. The green topcoat is peeling quite easily in the high contact points but less so in other areas. What would be the proper way to do this?

What we are looking at is a Bicast leather.

There is no proven way of peeling the coating off from the leather crust.

Any solvent used will dry up the leather crust.

Any solution that has a pH value above 7 will also denature the leather crust.

The only safe product you can use to help strengthen the leather crust while hydrating and peeling at the same time will be an idea as the next step is to fatliquor it. Fatliquoring will increase the strength and softness of the leather preventing dry rotting, stiffness, and cracking. We will discuss further some useful techniques of peeling it.

This Razor 60 is a useful tool to strip leather finishes when used in conjunction with the Hydrator 3.3 and Fatliquor 5.0 systems.

Another useful tool is using this Leather Eraser 4 to remove any unwanted residue and dry prep the leather for a top coat refinishing.

Here is an example of a stripped aniline leather.
The leather grains without a finish.
And after it is sealed with a gloss topcoat.
To have a more natural look I would recommend the satin waxy topcoat found in this Kit
