>>> What kind of leather is this
This looks like “Aniline” finished leather. Could be dark-brown or antique-brown when you inspect from the reverse side of the cushion. To inspect if this is aniline dye through unzipping and see the color of the suede side.
>>> And is it far gone to repair
Remember that leather is already a used material, first as a hide of a ‘cow’. It was tanned, fatliquored, repaired, and colored from the tannery. If it was ‘repaired’ once it can be repeatedly repaired to a certain degree if the leather chemistry integrity is still intact.
>>> Our dogs have damaged and scuffed the chaise cushion the worst. I don’t know if this can be restored or not.
The cows have wound marks, too and the skin was repaired according. You may see some scar marks too in most aniline leathers. Just like other natural materials like marbles and wood products.
