Questions!

We recently bought a leather chair used. It is a nice quality leather club style chair and ottoman from Ralph Lauren. It has been very well taken care of over the years, but the leather has lost it’s natural moisture, color and suppleness. The chair has some staining in the headrest area from the original owner sitting in it. Attached are some pictures so you can identify the type of leather and suggest products for restoring it to new condition, if possible. With the bottom cushion removed, you will notice the difference in color.

I found your info by googling and reading in a forum about restoring a leather Ralph Lauren chair. You had recommended that particular member the following…
Hydrator 3.3 > Fatliquor 5.0 > Hydrator 3.3 system

Please review the photos and let me know what you would recommend for this chair. I appreciate your time. Let me know if you need any further pics. Thanks, David.

>>> Attached are some pictures so you can identify the type of leather
From pictures, this is chrome-tanned leather that is dyed through with a secondary wax pull-up effect - thus is known as Aniline Wax Pull-up leather finish type.

>>> but the leather has lost it’s natural moisture, color and suppleness.
Chrome-tanned aniline dyed color is lost through sun fading, vegetable-tanned leathers on the other hand will darken just like our skin instead. So from the sun fading effect we can safely concluded that it is chrome-tanned, as chrome tanned leather is also more supple than vegetable-tanned leathers. So we have double characteristic to confirm that this leather is aniline wax pull-up leathers.

>>> and suggest products for restoring it to new condition, if possible.
Dye loss through sun fading has three options to restore its former color. In order of sequence:
Option-1 is by adding new dyestuff into the leather structure to stain it to the desired level of appearance with Aniline-21.

Option-2 is by activating the existing dormant dyestuff within the leather structure to resurface with Hydrator-3.3, replenishing the lost of original fatliquor that also contribute to the color intensity with Fatliquor-5.0, replenishing the lost of the secondary pull-up effect with EffectWax-8.6, and topcoat refinishing to increase the beauty of depth with AnilineTop-76G.

Option-3 is reassessing the desired appearance and further color intensity when desired is further boost with a matching Aniline-76 > AnilineTop-76G > Protector-D or D+ to finish.

>>> The chair has some staining in the headrest area from the original owner sitting in it.
These are body oil, grease and sweat stains that are absorbed into the leather that will need Degreaser-2.2 > Acidifier-2.0 system to removed

>>> With the bottom cushion removed, you will notice the difference in color.
The lighter color reveal the loss of dyestuff, primary fatliquor and the secondary wax pull-up effect.

Leather finishes identification is the main factor to determine the matching restoration system rather than brands. In this case is Aniline Wax Pull up leathers, based on the pictures.

Depends on your preference and the desired result we can discuss further.
