Gouged and Cracked Leather Shoes

Hi there,

I have a pair of Johnston & Murphy shoes that the local cobbler didn't repair to the level I would have liked.

I've attached an image for reference of the damage/repair to the shoe.

1. Can you remove the paint he sprayed on the shoe?

2. This was the original damage. I dropped a metal corner on the shoe and gouged out a chunk of the leather. It did not cut completely through. The cobbler glued the piece back on and sprayed the toe cap to mask the repair.

3. From wear the shoe is now starting to crack here.

How would one go about repairing this? How durable could I expect the repair to last?

Yes! Use Stripper-2.3, see system instruction here:

This will remove the unwanted spray without affecting the leather pH integrity.

Any protrusion may be precision level off with a Dremel Tool and seal up gaps with Bond-3D

This is the sequence of repair:

1- Degreaser-2.2 > Rinse-3.0 system for preparation cleaning.

2- Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 Hydrator-3.3 system to rejuvenate the leather structure for suppleness and tensile rip strength.

3- Leather Structure is strengthen with Impregnator-26

4- Gap is filled with Bond-3D.

5- Transparent dyestuff that brings the beauty of depth and camouflage darkening effect from repair with Aniline-76 - antique brown is likely to match is optional.

6- Gloss or satin luster topcoat to match and seal Aniline-76 is AnilineTop-76Gloss or Satin.

7- Reduce sticky soiling with rub-resistant - use Protector-B

The repair becomes part of the leather and is stronger then surrounding areas - just like a healing scar on our skin also becomes stronger then surrounding.
