Pigmented leathers may all look the same but falls into four categories namely; napa pigmented, semi-aniline, pigmented upholstery and pigmented auto seats as listed below.

The color content in each category may be the same but the binders composition may vary that gives each category its distinct characteristic in pigment strength.

Thus pigment coating strength varies accordingly.

Napa pigmented leather is absorbent and is common in garment and is the softest among pigmented leathers but also the most delicate when comes to either dry or wet rubbing.

Semi-aniline leather common in upholstery is semi-absorbent thus more delicate than the standard pigmented upholstery.

Pigmented upholstery leather common in upholstery may come in various fashion varieties is non-absorbent and may wear more than pigmented auto seats.

Pigmented auto seat in vehicle generally is design to withstand the hardest punishment from UV lights, extreme temperatures, rubs and sweat resistance with extra tough cross-linked topcoat.

So when comes to using stain removing products to remove stains like dye from blue jeans or ink from ballpoint or permanent marker bare in mind the difference in resistance and tolerance characteristic each type processes.

d’Marker10.5™ can be safely be used on pigmented auto seat but caution on standard pigmented upholstery and may be risky on semi-aniline leather and very risky on napa pigmented leather.

So products have to be tested first on a hidden area before actual stain removal.

Caution again, the hidden area pigment strength may be stronger than the stain area which may have been subjected to wear thus pigmented finish may be weaker resulting in color being removed during the stain removing process.



Napa pigmented leather is a chrome-tanned, from full-grain leather that characterize its special softness.

This leather is identified to have a pale greenish blue color when the pigment color is removed by dry or wet rubs.

These opaque black napa lamb leathers are common in garment and accessories such as wallet, briefcase and bag.

Sometimes it’s found in the interiors of luxury vehicles.

Leathers when wet and dry again will always stiffen-up.

Semi-aniline leather is dyed through with transparent aniline dyes and is micro-pigmented with opaque color to ensure a more even color consistency and a matching top coat is applied to protects against spills and stains more effective than aniline leather.

Thus the reverse or worn pigment areas reveal the similar transparent aniline dyed color as a way of identification.

Semi-aniline leather derive from the top-grain layers of cattle hides and are commonly made into upholstery.

Pigmented upholstery leather has its surface coated with pigment or other opaque solution.

They may involved a primary and a secondary pigment color that gives pigmented leather its varieties from antique, two-tone, wiped, tipped, pearlescent, metallic, fluorescent, etc.

The reverse side is usually the standard chrome-tanned pale greenish blue color or revealed when the pigment coating is worn by constant dry or wet rubs.

When darkening effect on cracks or worn areas is observed during the cleaning process fatliquor5.0™ is recommended.

It is to be applied to these weak areas as to soften and strengthen them when dry.

Otherwise these stiffed areas will gradually crack with constant stressing and flexing.

All non-penetrated fatliquor5.0™ that stays on the leather surface becomes useless and is to be wiped off with clean3.8™ follows by rinse3.0™.

Pigmented auto leather seats may have the same look as other pigmented upholstery but the quality is more stringent to resist UV lights, dry and wet rubs and to withstand extreme temperature fluctuation.

Its top coat may be cross-linked for added durability against perspiration.

Therefore it is the toughest among any other pigmented leathers.

And leather breathability for seating comfort is fine perforated too.
