View Full Version : Antiquing Leather - Color Loss Seat Cushions
Roger,
I sent a swatch of this leather, it's 2 tone but I should only need the secondary color. A dog used it a lot and the color is almost completely worn off the bottom cushions, there is also some color loss on the inside back. There are a few light scratches on the inside back too. I'm ordering 1 quart because she has a few other pieces that will need to be worked on in the future.
Can micro pigment be used on waxed aniline?

>>> Can micro pigment be used on waxed aniline?
Are you referring to the above leather as waxed aniline?
Wax aniline is aniline that has a waxy-matte topcoat like AnilineTop-21W.
Do not get confused with Wax Pull-Up!
AnilineTop-21W, waxy-matte is a more delicate waterbased emulsion topcoat that produces a matte luster with a waxy feel to match original finishes. Matching non-stick, rub-resistant protection is to use the waxy-feel leather-scented Protector-W+ or the scentless Protector-W.
Adhesion may be a problem unless the waxed topcoat is stripped with Stripper-2.3. To ensure proper adhesion Adhesor-73 is first applied prior to Micro-54 (micro-pigment).
Using Micro-54 for aniline is a conversion that devalues the quality of the leather, instead it should be maintain as Aniline, in this instance the “coating” version Aniline-76 will be easier to work with.
The next choice is to use Hybrid 2Tone-37 a translucent version.
Only use the opaque pigment Micro-54 as the last option.

Roger, I see you're sending antique burgundy to match. What procedure do you want us to use to restore this leather?
Roger, How do you want us to proceed with this sofa?

Recommended procedure:
1]. Use a lint free towel to apply Adhesor-73 in a circular motion. All weak pigment will be removed with this dual action both removing and ensuring the surface is seal of scratches to produce a smooth surface. When color shows on a white lint free towel change side and continues.
2]. A fine cone-shape airbrushing to existing finishes with overlapping will create a random effect.
3]. Wipe effect is created using Adhesor-73 on a semi damp white lint free towel and gently rub over the grain to reduce the color intensity, when the finish is almost dry or dry.
Any excess is removed with Adhesor-73 to prevents chemically deteriorating or weakening the finishes.
Let's see some pictures.

Thanks for the feedback.
What technique did you used?
Stipper, Clean3.8 about 3 to 5 times until towels showed almost no dye transfer, Rinse 2x, Adhesor sponge brush on wipe off with paper towels, airbrush Antique 27 custom color in circular overlapping strokes 5 to 7 coats, Micro topG 54. I know you said W for wax but I opted for gloss because we had problems with microtop Satin and matte the same day. And the original sofa looked a little glossy anyway.

Unlike gloss, satin and matte have the duller that sinks to the bottom and need to be stir well and filter (nylon stocking) prior to spraying.
May I know what psi do you set for spraying?
Please also show the type of spray gun you use.
