    Default wax contained conditioner

    Hi all,

I've recently bought a Collonil diamant cream polish, to use for my wallet, it contains wax, cedar oil and some other stuff. i mainly wanted to use it for conditioning my wallet, but then
i saw in a couple of websites that one should never use wax contained material with leather
because it would not let leather to breath and hence harms the leather. is this right? and can
i use that for conditioning my leather which is kind of dry.

can i use that for conditioning my leather which is kind of dry.

Dryness of leather in this case may be due to the diminishing effect of the original fatliquor (fat, oil and water) through evaporation as VOC (volatile organic compound). Dryness and stiffness may also be caused by leaching out of the fatliquor when alkaline cleaners are used. As the average pH of leather is from 3 – 5, it’s recommended to use cleaners that are within this leather-safe pH range.

i mainly wanted to use it for conditioning my wallet,

To condition the wallet against dryness, is to introduce fat and oil into the leather structure. This is done by using an emulsion fatliquor where the fat and oil are water encased in suspensions, which look like fresh milk. When applied to the leather it is quickly absorbed into the leather structure, where the negative fatliquor is hydrogen-bond with the positive leather protein fibers and the encasing water breaks free and wicks up. The fat and oil coats the fibrils that lubricates it, allowing it to slight over one another smoothly when the leather is flexed with stretchability and compressibility, thus imparts softness, suppleness and strength.

but then i saw in a couple of websites that one should never use wax contained material with leather because it would not let leather to breath and hence harms the leather.

Transpiration is one characteristic that makes breathable leather unique. The breathing pores should not be clog up when conditioning it, is a desirable expectation. That is why the leather is originally done with fatliquor, where the water contents breaks free when the fat and oil hydrogen-bond with the protein fibers. The plumping water contents helps separates the inter-fibrillary spaces and transform them into breathing spaces when dry, that allows the leather to breathe through, known as transpiration.

    is this right?

The question is the medium of the wax, is it in a form of a paste, a cream or an emulsion. How does the wax gets to lubricate the leather fibrils within the leather structure. It would be more effective if it is in a form of an emulsion. In wax pull-up aniline and nubuck leathers, the secondary structural conditioner is infused by wax. The wax is introduces exactly the same method as the primary fatliquoring, using a wax emulsion. Again the water contents will leave the inter-fibrillary spaces and leave behind a breathing space.

Be it "structural" primary or secondary conditioning by wax, fat or oil - the structural integrity of the leather should remain breathable or transpirable.

Default Conditioning Channel Bag with Fatliquor

Picture shows how fatliquor (fat, oil & water) is sprayed applied onto this Channel Bag to condition it with softness, suppleness and strength, when dry...with leather breathability or transpirability.

Thanks for your interesting technical replies. i learned many useful things from them. so as i
learned using wax-contained conditioners doesn't necessarily harm leather. do you have any
ideas about this "Collonil diamant" leather cream polish or collectively about Collonil products? or do you have any suggestions about a special leather conditioner brand or product?
