Default Crate and Barrel leather loveseat, to Clean Vomit and to Repair it.

    Hello,

I have a Crate and Barrel leather loveseat that is about ten years old.

My son had stomach flu and vomited on one of the cushions.

I would like to order one of your kits to clean and repair it,

but I'm not sure what kind of leather it is.

It is shiny, not suede. But I am not sure which type it is.

    How do I tell?

    Thanks, Devin

Leather identification from pictures is of Aniline Wax Pull-up types. This wax pull-up characteristically lightens up when pulled or scratched on hidden areas, as this test may not be relevant when the wax effect has diminished in aged and worn areas. Label identification is another and may be found under the cushion or the sofa itself.

Vomit are protein-based body discharge and tends to coagulate with the leather protein fiber making removal more tedious and requires a specialty product such as Leather Protein Cleaner 9.9 and pH balanced with Acidifier 2.0 rinse to control leather becoming tacky.

Repairing to the topcoat damages is inevitable, due to the nature of the protein stain tenaciously binding with the leather.

My recommendation for cleaning up the vomit is this:

Repair to the topcoat would require:

    >>> Very helpful. Would you recommend refinishing the whole sofa or just the cushion that we need to clean the vomit out of?

The cushion that has the vomit will need a special cleaning and refinish accordingly to see the difference.

    >>> Can we just of the one cushion, or is it likely to not match once we re-topcoat it?

Once you re-topcoat it, it will appear close to the showroom appearance in terms of gloss level, very unlikely to match the rest.

    >>> Not sure if the gloss is the same, etc.?

Gloss can be tested on a hidden area or the reverse side of the cushion and compared with unused areas.
The gloss will build up in layers and you can determine when to stop.
