    Default Peters- Peeling flaking chairs

    Roger,
We have these 2 chairs that are flaking and peeling. They were restored by someone else. We need to strip them down and restore them. How should we do it?

    >>> We need to strip them down

Use Stripper-2.3 (leather-safe) for stripping unwanted finishes.
    And a stripper brush (StrippingBrush-9
    http://www.leatherdoctor.com/strippingbrush-9/
helps detailing the stitches more efficiently).

    >>> and restore them. How should we do it?

1st - Determine original finishes by removing “flaking and peeling... restored by someone else.” If there are signs of fading, then it is most likely aniline dyed. And Aniline-76
    http://www.leatherdoctor.com/aniline-76/
will restore back to original finishes. If there are no signs of fading, then probable it is semi-aniline using micro pigment like Micro-54.

    >>> How should we do it?

The standard of refinishing with Leather Doctor system is as follows:

    Step-1 - Preparation for Refinishing:
Remove accumulated soiling, grease and oil and unwanted finishes in this case with Stripper-2.3 and follows with rinsing either Acidifier-2.0 or Rinse-3.0. A through stripping with rinsing in most cases suffice. Otherwise all known stains are removed accordingly.

    Step-2 - Leather Rejuvenating System:
The close-up pictures shows evident of dryness as cracks.
And will need Hydrator-3.3 to soak through the leather structure to lessen the cracks and plumps it as well.
When the leather structure is swollen up, Fatliquor-5.0 is repeated replenished until the fatliquor stays on the surface and absorbed no more.
Leave to natural dry and repeat one more cycle of Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 till the leather absorb no more.
All surface fatliquor residues are then removed with Hydrator-3.3 to a squeaky feel.
Leave to slow overnight dry for extra softness.

    Step-3 - Dry Preparation:

Eraser-4 and fine sanding is used accordingly to remove existing deteriorating finishes.

    Step-4 - Repairs:

    Any repairs follows accordingly.

    Step-5 - Adhesion Promotion

Adhesor-73 is scrub with 3M white nylon pad to remove deteriorating finishes and wipe with a lint-free towel.
This primer preparation, applied by scrubbing, ensures no failure to the new finishing, you mentioned above . . . (flaking and peeling . . . restored by someone else).

    Step-6 Color Finishing:

Aniline-76 (transparent) or Micro-54 (opaque) when both are mixed in equal ratio it becomes (translucent).

    Step-7 Topcoating:

Aniline-76 matches AnilineTop-76 in gloss or satin luster.
Micro-54 matches MicroTop-54 in the satin luster as the common match.

    Step-8 Protector:

Rub-resistant protector will reduce flaking and peeling as well from friction rubs.

Also here is a close up of the piping along the arm. I seem to have sanded a bit too deep and turned it almost to a nubuck. any suggestions?

These close-up shows dryness of the leather, and need to proceed with Step-2 prior to the piping repairs in Step-4.
