    Default Restoration Hardware Leather Couch

    Hi Roger,

We spoke yesterday regarding my Restoration Hardware couch.

Just wanted to confirm what I should purchase and see if there’s anything else you would recommend.

The cushion on the right I used the Lexol deep cleaner and then the Lexol conditioner.

The Lexol did NOT take the water stain out and the conditioner took away the beautiful shine.

Wanting to clean this couch and get it shining again like the cushion on the left.

Let me know what you recommend. Thanks! Dave

    >>> The Lexol did NOT take the water stain out

The Science of Water Stain Phenomenon:
If the water stain is like the cushion on the left that looks like rings with a darker outer ring. Darker outer rings phenomenon is due to the pH value of the water, that causes the leather constituents like the tanning agents, dyestuff and fatliquor to break the hydrogen bond from the leather protein fiber. Leather protein fiber is an amphoteric material so, any liquid that has a pH value higher then 7 will shift the protein fiber ionic negative (-ve). Behaving like a magnet “like poles repels” the leather constituents moves away from the alkaline influence of the liquid that forms the darker outer rings.

    Solution to the Problem:
A low pH value of 1.5 > 2.0 will pH balance the high pH alkaline overexposure, bringing the leather pH value to its pH neutral of 3 to 5. The darker rings will redistribute itself and even out the appearance. Product recommend to rectify the water stain is with CleanPro-1.5 as cleaning and Acidifier-2.0 as rinse. Note the products suffix numbers denotes its pH value. Thereafter, in a standard care see the system of care with Kit-Aw3 Aniline Wax Pull-up Leather Care Kit. See instructions accordingly . . .

    >>> and the conditioner took away the beautiful shine.

The Science that Took Away the Beautiful Shine:
Oil will dissolve Wax naturally. And as the wax is dissolves the shines dissolves with it as well. The conditioner has too much of stuffing oil contents not originally used that is the cause. In the original tanning process, Fatliquor-5.0 (leather structural conditioner) is used to supple up the leather. The dyestuff is then seal with AnilineTop-76G (clear gloss top coat) that also produce the shine. Additional or secondary shine derived from EffectWax-8.6, which produced a natural shine when heat activated. See instructions accordingly . . .

    >>> Wanting to clean this couch

You will need to removed what you have put onto the leather - that is the “Lexol Cleaner and the Lexol Conditioner” becomes the main problem. Since most of the Lexol Conditioner is “oil”, it then need to be degreased with Degreaser-2.2 > Acidifier-2.0 (surface rinse) > Hydrator-3.3 (structural rinse). A leatherEraser-4 helps to remove oily surface residue with better friction then with the horseHairLeatherBrush-1 during wet cleaning and dry cleaning for inspection. This is done accordingly until the “Lexol Conditioner” is removed. Degreasing also removes the original fatliquor (fat and oil content) to a degree and you will notice its dryness or stiffness when dry). During inspection, when the oily surface disappear with the help of leatherEraser-4. The further lost of the original fatliquor (ionic charged fat and oil content) is replenished with Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 Hydrator-3.3 system accordingly.

    >>> and get it shining again like the cushion on the left.

When the unwanted “Lexol Conditioner” is removed free of greasiness and the leather is rejuvenated to desired suppleness. It is then ready to restore its shine. The primary sealing shine is with AnilineTop-76G by coating with foamBrush-3 or with Towel-5 padding, until the desired shine is achieve. The secondary shine is performed with EffectWax-8.6 (presently out of stock). This secondary shine is perform on a periodic basis, to maintain its shine without the need of the primary sealer shine.
