    >>> Customers had a leak in their kitchen and water dripped on to the chair in the basement.

Check from your customer if the water is clean from the tap.

Ask for pictures of the ceiling damage, is it clean or are wood stain, besides if it has rust stain as well.

In a clean water damages from running tap it is the pH value of the water about 7 that has cause the leather constituents like the tanning agents, dyestuff and fatliquor to migrate or braking of the hydrogen bond between the weakening ionic positive (+ve) charge leather fiber and the ionic (-ve) charged leather constituents.

To stabilized or revert the strength of the amphoteric leather protein fiber will require a low pH cleaning system in this sequence . . . CleanPro-1.5 > Acidifier-2.0 > Hydrator-3.3 system. It will stabilized the discoloration and even out the appearance evenly with a richer color saturation. Wood stains if any will need CleanTannin-3.5 redox (reduction oxidation) reaction when dry. Any rust stains will need CleanTarnish-1.3 > Basifier-8.8 system. When all stains are removed and color stabilized and enriched softening the leather structure will restore the leather suppleness that prevents them from getting stiff and cracking. Use this guide for stain removal.

Leather Doctor® Kit-A3.ws, leather water stain remover kit is formulated to remove leather stain as the results of destabilizing the leather pH equilibrium. The side effect of alkaline overexposure manifests as bleedings, marks and rings behaving like litmus paper. The darkening marks or rings are leather constituents that breaks bond with the protein fiber and migrate forming the darkening effect or outer ring. ProClean-1.5 with a pH value of 1.5 is a very low water-based acidic cleaner with an extra protonating or pH balancing function besides providing a thorough deep cleaning. The amphoteric leather protein fiber is given an extra ionic positive (+ve) charge to stabilize and re-attract the other ionic negative (-ve) leather constituents and in water damage cases are mainly the fugitive dyestuff and fatliquor. Acidifier-2.0 (pH 2.0) is used as rinse and further control the leather from denaturing and controlling from leather becoming sliminess or tackiness. Hydrator-3.3 (pH 3.3) helps to redistribute the fugitive dyestuff by saturating the entire leather structure and let it dwell up to 72 hours to even out appearance. Evaporation control from untimely evaporation is done with putting into s seal container for small items and plastic wrapping for large items. Optimum saturation is a little moisture oozing out of the leather when press between fingers and thumb for ease of water movement and is a critical observation for a movement of the dyestuff and redistributing during the dwelling stage. Fatliquor-5.0 (pH 5.0) replenishing when the leather is almost drying or up to 25% total moisture content will replace the Hydrator-3.3 and allow to dry for suppleness with softness and strength. A very slow drying will produce a softer leather. Protector-B imparts a soft natural buttery-feel when the leather is completely dry and helps reduce friction rubs. Leather is pH sensitive thus products suffix denotes their pH value for a safe water stain rectification.

    Application Instruction:

    1. Dry soil removal prior to application.

    2. Spray CleanPro-1.5 and agitate with horsehair Brush-1 and towel extract until it shows clean.

    3. Spray Acidifier-2.0 and agitate with horsehair Brush-1 and towel extract until towel shows clean.

    4. Proceed with Hydrator-3.3 to relax and separate the stick together fiber structure and dwelling it up to 72 hours helps to redistribute the surrounding leather constituents back to the exposed areas. Ensure that the entire article is saturated with a little moisture oozing out when press between thumb and fingers and control evaporation by butting small article into a concealed container or plastic wrapping. Interval inspection to ensure the moisture level in replenished evenly to facilitate dyestuff redistribution. It may not work with insufficient moisture level. Inspect for dyestuff redistribution satisfaction prior to fatliquor replenished it.

    5. Surface when dry needs be moist again with Hydrator-3.3 for an even appearance preconditioning it prior to Fatliquor-5.0 replenishing. The amount of fatliquor (fat and oil) content when dry should be around 14% read from a leather moisture meter or an equivalent wood moisture meter. Otherwise apply until satisfaction.

    6. Protector-B is applied when the leather is dry, that will impart a non-stick, rub-resistance surface with a buttery-feel.

Browning from the ceiling and the carpet suggest that the water (suppose clean tap water) has flow through the wood that picks up the browning color and perhaps a very little of rust in the mix from nails and screws.

The product mentioned CleanTannin-3.5 and CleanTarnish-1.5 are both redox (reduction-oxidation) products that will work on the ceiling and carpet as well to safely vanish the stain away.

    >>> Also if I re-dye the water stained chair do I have to repair the water damage area first?

The repair to the water damages is highly recommend:

1st to return the leather back to its pH chemistry integrity,

2nd to replenish the original fatliquor content up to 14% average so that the damaged areas is soften up and prevents unnatural creases and wrinkles that will leads to cracks from usage,

3rd since transparent dyestuff is transparent, the surface appearance evenness will help reduce unnecessary build-up of the “surface coating dyestuff” making an easier refinishing with greater satisfaction.

Leather Doctor® Kit-A7.cl - aniline leather dye refinishing kit is designed for dyestuff and topcoat refinishing from the simple sunlight fading to the severely sweat damages from body oil and grease. Most severely penetrated, prolonged and neglected stains show a darkening effect with a sticky feel have its topcoat and dyestuff probably deteriorated by the sweat. When the stain feels sticky, it is a sign of leather denaturing and reverting to rawhide from breaking of bonds with the tanning agent. When sign of color is transfer to a white towel, it indicates that the dyestuff has also break bonds with the protein fiber. When leather is stiff or shows signs of whitish residue migrating, it shows that the fatliquor is breaking bonds as well with the protein fiber. The main component of the leather protein fiber is amphoteric while the other constituents are not; shifting of the pH mainly caused from sweat to alkalinity affects the pH imbalance. To revert from denaturing into rawhide prior to topcoat refinishing, contaminated alkaline soiling is removed with Degreaser-2.2, a waterbased (pH 2.2) multifunctional degreaser that emulsifies greasy contamination besides controlling dye bleeding and charging the protein fiber ionic positive for strengthening the attraction between the ionic negative tanning agent, dyestuff and fatliquor. Deflocculated and suspended soiling is towel extracted, thereafter rinse and pH balanced with Acidifier-2.0 to prevent the leather from reverting to rawhide. When leather feels sticky or slimy it is a sign of leather denaturing, a squeaky feel when wet is a sign of a healthy leather. Hydrator-3.3 relaxes stiff leathers and removes surface tension free from surface blotchiness prior to fat and oil replenishing. Fat and oil is replenished with Fatliquor-5.0 to rejuvenate the leather for the desired suppleness when dry. Custom redyeing commences prior to topcoat refinishing. Protector-B imparts a non-stick rub-resistant protection with a buttery-feel that shield against sticky soiling and reduce friction noises. Protector-B+ is the classic leather scented version. Note that the mentioned product suffix number denotes its pH value in this holistic leather-safe aniline leathers dyestuff and topcoat refinishing system.

    >>> Is this for example a kit that would do a couch? I understand you can't dictate what I must have buy, but you should have a general idea if the kit you recommend would cover one or 2 chairs.

To restore the water damages you will need:
    http://www.leatherdoctor.com/kit-a3-...n-remover-kit/

and color refinishing you will need:
    http://www.leatherdoctor.com/kit-a7-...finishing-kit/

    as mentioned:

    >>> Ok. So will the 1 kit for re-colouring with the quart possibly do 2 chairs?

These kits are for general application, from handbag, jacket to upholstery - it is not pack for any particular coverage, thus refills will require to complete a particular project. In this case of 2 chairs, we can work backwards with what is already in practice, from your experience it will require 24 oz. that will be equivalent close to 1 quart. When we work backwards this is what we derived for the quantity required closed and it is always prudent to allow a little excess then short supply. Please do not hold me responsible if there is a short supply or excess from these estimates, as I do not have control over your application.

Refills for Kit-A7.cl for 2 chairs (estimate):

    Degreaser-2.2 = 1 x 250ml
    Acidifier-2.0 = 3 x 250ml
    Clean-3.8 = 1 x 250ml
    Rinse-3.0 = 3 x 250ml
    Hydrator-3.3 = 5 x 250ml
    Fatliquor-5.0 = 3 x 250ml
    Adhesor-73 = 2 x 250ml
    Aniline-76 = quart
    AnilineTop-76G = 2 x 250ml

Refills for Kit-A3.ws for 1 chair (estimate):

    Hydrator-3.3 = 2 quarts
    Fatliquor-5.0 = 1 x 250ml

Of course, you can disagree with the estimate, until we are there - we had to see how the leather response to even out the water discoloration. What we see is merely the proverbial tip of an iceberg, the hydrator has to saturate the entire leather structure in order to redistribute its leather constituent back to place and that rely on the amount of water movement, that is a free flow of water content within the leather structure.

    Hi Roger
When the glove comes in I will post it .
Another question. I stripped this chair, unfortunately it won't come apart. With the back the way it is with the buttons and the curve to it . I can't get serran wrap to stay on it and its drying .
I'm wondering if I created a real humid environmentfor it .
I was thinking of building a little plastic room a little bigger the the chair and putting a humidifier in it to raise the moisture content on the chair . Then applying Hydrator.
Right now I put a lot on and it's drying real fast .
    What's your thoughts ?

To have a direct impact, soak up the leather with distilled water, then apply Hydrator-3.3 to redistribute the fugitive or migrating dyestuff to satisfaction.
