Default Restoration Hardware – Wax Pull-up Leathers – need products advice.

I would like to purchase some products to restore my Restoration Hardware couch. It's a Lancastor model with Brompton leather/Waxed Pull Up leather. It has many dog scratches but the leather is not ripped. It is also faded from the sun a bit and needs some degreasing from sunscreens n lotions on our skin over the years. It's about 7 to 8 years old and has not been kept up very well with the lotions n protectors. We would like to restore it as much as possible and your advice on what to purchase n how to do it is much appreciated. Ursula Valencia.

    Characteristic of Wax Pull-up leathers:
Wax pull-up leathers derive its color from dyestuff and effect wax that gives the leather a lively distressed look. When this leather is pulled, stretched or scratched, the waxes dissipate characteristically and become lighter in those areas. Sunlight and stretching through high wear areas are two main indications that the infused wax needs replenishing. As is, effect wax behaves just like the primary fatliquor they do diminish through ageing and will need periodic replenishing. Besides contributing to the color intensity, it improves in water shedding effect. Effect wax when applied to the leather penetrates while some transforms into fine cloudy crystal and remains on the surface. The dried surface white powdery deposits are then heat activated and when they melt, they coat the surface with a glossy sheen. In a restorative care cycle a urethane gloss topcoats is applied to restore its original appearance.

    >>> It has many dog scratches

Dog scratches unlike cat scratches have seldom-sinking damages into the leather structure but rather surface finishes damages.
A holistic approach will comprise of a continuous series of sequence to complement and dovetailing to maximize the end result comprehensively. The sequence of process will comprise of the followings: 1) Degreasing system with Degreaser-2.2 > Rinse-3.0. 2) Leather Rejuvenating system with Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 > Hydrator-3.3. 3) Fashion Effect Rejuvenating system with EffectWax-8.6. 4) Top Coating system with AnilineTop-76G. 5) Protection with Protector-D or D+ (leather-scented). The final of the dog scratches repair system is working using a simple cotton swab with Anilinetop-76G over the scratches and is sand in between drying using 1500/2000grit to smooth out the depression if any. System products mentioned are found in this Kit-Aw6.tc

    >>> It is also faded from the sun a bit

Sun fading is a characteristic of Aniline Wax Pull-up leathers. Since the appearance of the aniline wax pull-up leather comprises of the aniline dyestuff, fatliquor and wax effect a holistic approach is to rejuvenate all of them. 1) Aniline dyestuff may be rejuvenated from within the leather structure by resurfacing them with the help of Hydrator-3.3. When the Hydrator-3.3 is left to dwell up to 72hours with control evaporation using plastic cling wrapper it will activate the dormant dyestuff to a degree to re-distribute and surface. To determine whether new dyestuff is needed will depends on the outcome of the hydrating process and if so desired optional Aniline-21 matching dyestuff is to be used. Depending on the existing topcoat rate of absorbency may be difficult to stain the leather protein fiber direct, if so, it has to be removed completely with Stipper-2.3 and spray dye to stain until satisfaction. Hydrator-3.3 dwelling again will help to redistribute any blotchiness for a more even appearance. 2) Fatliquor (fat and oil) from the tannery averages 14% and begins to evaporate as VOC (volatile organic compound) just like out car engine oil and heat from direct sunlight accelerate the dryness thus looses its color intensity as well. Replenishing will require Fatliquor-5.0. Depending on existing remaining percentage of fatliquor content the desired amount is replenish accordingly. 3) Fashion wax effect contributes to the color distress richness as well and under direct sunlight diminishes too. EffectWax-8.6 is replenished until the desired lively distressed level is achieved. System products mentioned are found in this Kit-Aw7.cl

    >>> and needs some degreasing from sunscreens n lotions on our skin over the years.

Degreasing is not recommended to be performed as a stand alone, but the beginning of a restoration processes that need to be process in a continuous sequence of wet processes and allows to dry out only after the Fatliquor-5.0 process. This continuous wet process is to prevent the leather from drying below 25% moisture level or until wetness is extracted until towel shows dry. It is only allow to dry after Fatliquor-5.0 is sufficiently replenished up to the average 14% level when dry. The sequence of process will comprise of the followings: 1) Degreasing system with Degreaser-2.2 > Acidifier-2.0. 2) Leather Rejuvenating system with Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 > Hydrator-3.3. 3) Fashion Effect Rejuvenating system with EffectWax-8.6. 4) Top Coating system with AnilineTop-76G. 5) Protection with Protector-D or D+ (leather-scented). Instruction: 1). Dry soil removal prior to application. 2). Shake until cloudy gel, apply and agitate with horsehair Brush-1, and/or leather Eraser-4. 3). Allow dwelling 5 to 30 minutes or before it dries for a complete soiling suspension to occur. 4). Extract suspended soiling with dry terry cotton towel. 5). Then remove remaining residue with Rinse-3.0 to a squeaky-clean, for reduce bleeding use Acidifier-2.0 instead. 6). Proceed to Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 > Hydrator-3.3 system to rejuvenate the leather with suppleness when dry thus preventing the leather drying stiff that easily leads to cracks.
Tips: Optimum fatliquor (fat and oil) moisture content in dry healthy leathers is up to 14% when read with a leather moisture meter or an equivalent wood moisture meter. Existing cracks magnifies when fatliquor moisture content falls below 7% level when dry for most leather.

    >>> It's about 7 to 8 years old and has not been kept up very well with the lotions n protectors.

Lotions you need for periodic care is Hydrator-3.3, Fatliquor-5.0 and EffectWax-8.6. Protector you will need is Protector-D scentless or the leather-scented version of Protector-D+.

    >>> We would like to restore it as much as possible. and your advice on what to purchase n how to do it is much appreciated.

Default No RINSE needed w Kit-Aw7.cl??

I notice the Rinse is not in the Aw7 Kit. Do I not need it after the degreaser? I’m a little confused. I want to degrease and get the dog scratches out. I assume I should but the Aw7 kit but there is no Rinse in that one and the instructions in the dog scratch section say to Rinse??? Info is much appreciated. thank you.

I recommend you take the Kit-Aw6.tc and add individual bottles mentioned to the kit.
Dyeing is only an option see these pictures of dog scratch repairs without the need of dyes - beautifully!
You can achieve the same result, if you follow instructions correctly.
