Default Aniline (Wax Pull-up) - Restoration Hardware - Sofa Scratches - questions

    Hi Roger,

You just spoke to my husband on the phone. We have two questions….

    1. We have a few light, scratches that appear to be only on the surface and are not abrasive scratches to our restoration hardware sofa arm. Do we need wax effect and/or any other products?

    2. We also have what appears to be sun damage or discoloration to the top of back cushion. Which product and process is best?

A holistic approach is by a system of processes to see diminishing of the lightening scratch and AnilineTop-21G may be the last process without resorting to any additional coloring as follows:

1 – Degreaser-2.2 > Acidifier-2.0 system prepares the leather free from body oil, grease an sweat contamination and recommend to be done on a complete section for the entire processes. Degeaser-2.2 is shaken up to gel and transfer to the horsehair Brush-1 and agitate into the leather for an even appearance. Eraser-4 is used for better traction. Cotton terry towel is used for wet extraction until towel shows clean. Acidifier-2.0 is spray and remaining residue is towel extracted. Inspection while the leather is damp to check for tackiness or sliminess, the leather should have a healthy squeaky feel, otherwise Acidifier-2.0 is further used to pH balance until a squeaky feel.

2- Hydrator-3.3 is used to activate the dormant dyestuff within the leather structure to resurface. Product is spray and Brush-1 agitates until the leather is hydrated with an even appearance. A cling wrapper is place over the section airtight and left to dwell up to 72hrs. A 24hrs inspection ensures the moisture level is kept high with a little moisture oozing out when presses. Thereafter the cling wrapper is removed, massaging or cross stretching help to improves the appearance of the scratch and the leather is left natural drying up to between 14% and 25%.

3 – Fatliquor-5.0 continues while the leather is damp from Hydrator-3.3 and not completely dry. And as the water content evaporates to between 14% and 25%, at each cycle more fatliquor is replenished. And the leather is left to natural dry. By this time the appearance should improved immensely.

4 – WaxEffect-8.6 is applied and Brush-1 agitates to saturate the leather structure for an even appearance. Special attention may goes to the scratches with help of a cotton swab. And left to natural drying to see white wax crystal forms on its surface. A heat blower or hot hair dryer to see it melts or transforms to a natural shine activates the fine crystal wax.

5 – Additional gloss shine to match original is done with application of AnilineTop-21G.

6 – Protect with Protector-D+ and continue as routine care to takes care of light scuffing.

    >>> 2. We also have what appears to be sun damage or discoloration to the top of back cushion. Which product and process is best?

    Follow the above 1, 2, 3 & 4.
Hydrator-3.3 will activate the dormant dyestuff to the surface when kept to dwell for up to 72hrs with control evaporation using a cling wrapper bring dyestuff to the surface. Fatliquor-5.0 when diminishes loses its intensifying or magnifying effect. And the fashion WaxEffect-8.6 will brings back the characteristic pull-up effect as well. All three products contribute the appearance in terms of color intensity without resorting to matching coloring Aniline-21 (as an option). http://www.leatherdoctor.com/kit-aw7...finishing-kit/

Leather Doctor® Kit-Aw6.tc, aniline wax pull-up leather topcoat refinishing kit is designed for after degreasing in a holistic approach. Most penetrated stains from the head and hands that show a darkening effect have its topcoat probably deteriorated by the oil, grease and sweat. Deteriorated topcoat removed during the degreasing process is refinished with AnilineTop-21G after wax effect rejuvenated. Removing penetrated soiling contamination starts with Degreaser-2.2, a waterbased (pH 2.2) multifunctional degreaser that emulsifies the greasy contamination, controls dye bleeding and charging the protein fiber ionic positive for strengthening the attraction between the ionic negative tanning agent, dyestuff and fatliquor. Deflocculated and suspended soiling is towel extracted, thereafter rinse and pH balanced with Acidifier-2.0 to prevent the leather from reverting to rawhide. When leather feels sticky or slimy it is a sign of leather denaturing, a squeaky feel when wet is a sign of healthy leather. Hydrator-3.3 relaxes stiff leathers and removes surface tension free from surface blotchiness prior to fat and oil replenishing. Fat and oil is replenished with Fatliquor-5.0 to rejuvenate the leather for the desired suppleness when dry. Wax Effect-8.6 rejuvenates the structural wax pull-up effect and coagulates a cloudy waxy coating on the surface to be heat activated into the characteristic glossy sheen. Protector-D+ enhances a non-stick draggy-feel to shield against sticky soiling, besides healing and concealing lightening scuff and abrasion marks. Note that the mentioned product suffix number denotes its pH value in this holistic leather-safe aniline wax pull-up leathers topcoat refinishing system.
