    >>> Semi Aniline Restoration

This leather is identified as Pigmented rather than Semi-Aniline, even though the suede side is of the same color.
The difference is vat dyeing versus spray dyeing on the reverse suede side.
In a vat-dyed leather when scratch will show the suede coloring.
In a spray dyed leather will still shows the crust coloring.
Thus pigmented leather is heavier in its finishes compare to semi-aniline leathers.
So when using Micro-54, a 10% Thickener-48 to the coloring will help better cover-up during the repairs and refinishing.

    >>> Also how should we proceed to fix this much cat scratch?

Repair is the third phase after leather rejuvenation in the sequence for a complete restoration.

General sequence of a complete leather structure and finishes restoration is as follows:

    A – Restorative Cleaning:
Restorative cleaning to prepare the surface free for soiling contamination is simply to degrease it.
A1 – Degreaser-2.2 is used in conjunction with horsehair Brush-1 and leather Eraser-4.
A2 – Rinse-3.0 is used to remove remaining residue.

    B – Leather Rejuvenating:
All exposed areas be it cat scratch, worn welting, creases, wrinkles and micro cracks may becomes absorbent during the above restorative cleaning revealed as darkening effect.
Recommended that these areas including the seating cushion be well hydrated with Hydrator-3.3 to relax the creases and wrinkles prior to fatliquoring with Fatliquor-5.0

    C – Repairs:
In a cat scratch repairs when look closely we may group them into 3 categories:
Dug-in – may need a dental prick to ease them out.
Flap – may need to be bond back from the suede side.
Scratch – may need to be filled up.
Products used may include Bond-3D, Stucco-90 and matching color Micro-54.
Bond-3D is alone for Dug-in and Flap.
All fibers pull out will need to be ease back and general sanding is not recommended.
Any surface fill up will require a mix of the above 3 mentioned products to add strength with flexibility and aesthetic appearance to Stucco-90.

    >>> You mentioned a ball shaped tool?

Just like a dentist a collection of tools helps.
A ball tip tool helps in smooth out linear repairs.

    D – Sealing & Adhesion Coating:
Adhesor-73 is used to smooth out any surface roughness with help of fine sanding in between coats.

    E – Color Coating:
Color matching Micro-54 viscosity is increase with a 10% additional of Thicknener-48 to the mix to reduce the number of coating for heavy pigmented leathers.

    F – Protection:
The worn welting is the result of noisy friction rubs.
Protector-B+ will reduce friction noise thus translate to less friction wear and prolong the useful life of the finishes.

    # Example of Leather Rejuvenating to relax the creases and wrinkles

Although pigmented leather of any fashion finishing types generally is non-absorbent, that is water droplets will pools on its surface but may not be true when comes to frequently used areas such as the seat cushion. Micro crazing develops fast in these heavily used areas besides wear that makes the finishes absorbent. The leather structure becomes exposed and fatliquor easily evaporates from these weaker areas. With loss of the fat and oil moisture contents the leather shrink, stiffen and when flexed or stressed develops creases and wrinkles at these weak points. Rectification or restoration of the creases and wrinkles is accomplished with Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 > Hydrator-3.3 system after restoration cleaning with Prep-7.7 > Clean-3.8 > Rinse-3.0 system.

Hydrator-3.3 is applied with horsehair Brush-1 and or with FoamBrush-3 until the leather structure is fully saturated with a little moisture oozing out when press between finger and thumb. Plastic wrapped to control evaporation and is left to dwell up to 72hrs. The cushion is inspected at in between interval and stretch crosswise of creases and wrinkles helping to relax faster and topping up the moisture level to continue dwelling it to plumps up the leather.

At any time during the dwelling process where the objective is accomplished the dwelling process may cease and continue with the second step of fatliquoring it. The fully saturated leather is left to natural drying and as moisture evaporated while the leather is still damp Fatliquor-5.0 is applied to continue saturate it. The water contents of the fatliquor will also evaporate and leaving only the fat and oil behind. The more fatliquor is applied the softer and stronger the leather becomes when dry. Typically the maximum percentage of fatliquor content is up to 14% practice by modern tannery around the world.

Leather Approximate Quantity or Percentage of Fatliquor:
The quantities of fatliquor (fat and oil) contents retained in the leather after an universal tannery fatliquoring process may varies up to 14% depending on the leather types and it usage. This percentage drops as the fat and oil content diminishes or leaches through ageing, water, heat or chemical overexposure.
Leather rejuvenating or fatliquor replenishing is base on weight of the leather in relation to the percentage of remaining fatliquor. A simple calculation of percentage of fatliquor topping up requirement would be as follows:
If the weight of the leather in question is 100gm and fatliquor (fat and oil) content meter reading is less than 1%.
By applying 80gm of Fatliquor-5.0 to it will deliver an end result incremental of 13.3% fatliquor when dry as the 66.6% water contents evaporates.
In the leather rejuvenating Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 > Hydrator-3.3 system, Hydrator-3.3 plays an important role by relaxing, opening up the inter-fibrillary spaces, facilitating and redistributing colloidal water movement, protonating and doing all the pre-conditioning work prior to fatliquoring including cleaning up any excess surface remnants to have a sticky-free surface. In practice the ratio for Hydrator-3.3 is 2 to 1 of Fatliquor-5.0.
It works out to be approximately 160gm of Hydrator-3.3 plus 80gm of Fatliquor-5.0 to replenish a 100gm dry leather from less than 1% back to the original tannery up to 14% fatliquor content.

Leather Doctor® Kit P8.cl, pigmented leather color refinishing kit is design for a holistic restoration approach to not only the finishes but also rejuvenating the leather for suppleness and strengthening overstretching weakness for another cycle of practical use. Most of these repairs may range from missing finishes to abrading damages into the leather structure. Some expose areas may be contaminated with foreign soiling that includes conditioners, protectors, body oil, grease and sweat or alkaline overexposure from cleaners. A comprehensive repair for a long-term lasting solution will require a holistic approach to deal with both the exposed structure and surface finishes. The practical and functional softness and strength of the leather depends on the health of the structure with average thickness between 0.9 to 1.2mm from stiffness and cracking. The aesthetic aspect of the leather finishes averages 0.02mm (or 20 micron) in thickness for practical compressing and flexing from cracking. A leather-safe restoration system begins by stripping with Stripper-2.3 and rinsing with Rinse-3.0. Degreasing with Degreaser-2.2 follows with Acidifier-2.0. The suffix numbers of these four products denotes it pH value for recharging the protein fiber ionic positive besides the act of decontamination. The leather integrity is revitalizes once the ionic attraction between the positive protein fiber and its negative leather constituents like the tanning agent and fatliquor (fat, oil and water) is initiated. Leather rejuvenating system for softness and strength is accomplishes with Hydrator-3.3 follows with Fatliquor-5.0. Structural weakness from overstretching is re-strengthens with Impregnator-26, while surface uneven absorption is seals with Adhesor-73. These repair and auxiliary products where necessary reduces the need for color over-coating thus increase its flexibility and stretchability from premature cracking. Protector-B+ imparts a non-stick rub-resistant surface with a buttery feel, reduces noises that translate into less friction wear. As the leather surface is well lubricated it reduces compression when comes to heavy body contact thus reduces compressed creases and wrinkles.

Leather Doctor® Bond-3D is for leather structure bonding repairs, such as abrasion, cat-scratch, and filling repairs with Stucco-90, Micro-54, Anline-76 and Aniline-21. This waterbased medium soft polyurethane leather bond will not lift the leather finishes unlike other dry solvent-based glue. Works in conjunction with leather Patch-4S as sub patch and suede fibers as fillers. Excess clean up when dry will require the help of Bond-7A.
