Default Aniline (Sauvage) - Head/hand oil on Pottery Barn recliner

I have 2 recliners in similar condition with dark stains on the head and armrest areas. Pottery Barn identifies these as aniline, also I checked the back and it has a natural suede-like reverse side. Which kit should I buy to clean these? Is one kit enough? And will I have to dye the chairs afterward? Thanks for the advice!Name: photo-17.JPG

    >>> Pottery Barn identifies these as aniline, also I checked the back and it has a natural suede-like reverse side.

The reverse suede side having the same color range is typical of aniline leathers. For problem solving guide use this Aniline (A) Guide.

    >>> dark stains on the head and armrest areas.

Headrest and hand rest shows obvious body oil, grease and sweat. Oil and grease component of compound stain cause appearance, while the more serious sweat will denature the leather by shifting the amphoteric leather protein fiber ionic negative (-ve). Will need a holistic approach both restoring the leather structure and the surface appearance.

    >>> Which kit should I buy to clean these?

Aniline leathers is more absorbent than pigmented leathers thus most of these body contamination penetrates the leather and may appears more beneath, just like an iceberg most are submerged or a surface damaged apple, only sliding the apple will reveal how deep or bad the darkening effect is. In leather these accumulated contamination need to resurface and the only way is to use a leather-safe degreaser that not only emulsify the contamination it also charges the leather protein fiber positive (+ve) back to its pH chemistry integrity. One cycle of wicking process can only bring out so much, thus depending on the volume it will require a thorough blotting when damp and wicking using a proven “reverse technique” to wick through the paper towel and peel off then drying back onto the leather surface.

Rinse-3.0 is the follow up for blotting and surface rinsing; thereafter Hydrator-3.3 helps moves suspended soiling particulates beneath surface with the help of using the “reverse technique”.
In most cases in prolonged neglected contamination that will require a restorative cleaning the topcoat has deteriorated or damaged and will require a refinishing at least, otherwise the decontaminated areas will be left raw without a finish. AnilineTop-21G helps to restore its original topcoat.

However, besides the surface appearance, the leather chemistry or leather constituents should not be overlooked. Tanning agents when displace due to the weakening of the hydrogen bonding between the ionic positive (+ve) protein fiber will result in tackiness or worse cases sliminess, a sign of denaturing of the leather where it reverts to rawhide. Acidifier-2.0 will help rectify the denaturing problem by returning the leather to a healthy squeaky feel if the leather has not gone beyond the chemistry integrity threshold.

The moisture content for fresh new leather is up to 14% (the more the softer), unfortunate this moisture content mainly from the fatliquor (fat, oil and water) is also a volatile organic compound and diminishes or vaporizes. Shrinkage, stiffness and cracks is associated with dried or fatliquor depleted leathers. Leather rejuvenating process involves Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 system, where the hydrator is the preconditioner for the fatliquor and the fatliquor impart softness and strength to the leather.

The seat cushion shows thin-out or overstretch, with diminishes fatliquor and appearance may improves from the relaxing effect from Hydrator-3.3, thereafter the leather is plumps up the fat contents of the fatliquor while the oil contents imparts softness. Further correction is done with Impregnator-26 to permanent shrink back the over stretch into the leather structure. This is done from the reverse side as it may impart a darkening effect on light to medium range color.

Any surface abrasion that suede the leather grain or skin is correctable with Adhesor-73 to seal and smoothen the surface. Again this may produce a darkening effect for light to medium color leathers and test is mandatory prior to application. Decision has to balance between utility and appearance and there are no fix rules.

    >>> Is one kit enough?

This kit is for general application and for handbag will be enough, not enough for a couch. Refills are available. Do a testing on a section of the leather (reverse cushion) to determine the amount required for the total area.

    >>> And will I have to dye the chairs afterward?

Color for appearance is for aesthetic and it’s optional.
Practical redying is by “coating” and not by “staining” because the existing topcoat may makes the “staining” very uneven that blotchy and patchy is expected as the leather absorb differently thus the color more intense. Again that aniline dyestuff is transparent so both beauty and blemishes will still show through unless a darker color is desired to camouflage the blemishes. The decision for redyeing is after this sequence:
    1. Stains have to be totally removed otherwise they will be permanently buried and rot the leather from inside.
    2. Topcoat refinish to evaluate the appearance, this topcoat will enhance the beauty and also any blemishes but will give the least unexpected result from a darkening effect to light-to-medium color range.
    3. If there are too much blemishes and wish to camouflage them, the Impregnator-26 and Adhesor-73 will help camouflage any imperfection ending with AnilneTop-21G.
    4. Further decision for redying if desired is done over and ends with AnilineTop-21G again to seal.
    5. A final Protector-B+ helps prolong the wear of the leather that imparts a non-stick buttery-feel.

Products mention can be found in Kit A6.tc, except for the two repair products, namely Adhesor-73 and Impregnator-26 as an add-on.

Leather Doctor Kit A6.tc – Aniline Leather Topcoat Refinishing Kit
Leather Doctor® Kit A6.tc, aniline leather topcoat refinishing kit is designed for topcoat repairs from friction wear, accidental scratch, scuff and abrasion to deteriorating greasy sweat stains. These topcoat damages are identified as white, dull or darkening stain from bare body contacts. Accidental whitish damages in most cases are free of soiling and direct AnilineTop-21G application with in between dry sanding rectifies most damages. Repairs to topcoat from daily wears that dulls will require a degreasing to remove penetrated rub-in soiling prior to topcoat application in a sequence process including Degreaser-2.2 follows with Rinse-3.0; Hydrator-3.3 follows with Fatliquor-5.0 prior to topcoat application. In a greasy and sweaty topcoat damaged areas especially to the headrest and armrest, a deep degreasing is essential follows with Acidifier-2.0 to stabilize the hydrogen bonding between the protein fibers with the other leather constituent like the tanning agent, dyestuff and fatliquor. This deep degreasing process is assisted by leather Eraser-4 in both the wet and dry cleaning process to remove soiling particulates off the leather surface. Hydrator-3.3 helps in the colloidal water movement bringing suspended soiling particulates to resurface through a dwelling and wicking process. Fat and oil is replenished by Fatliquor-5.0 in an emulsion form to penetrate into the leather structure. Once the fat and oil is hydrogen bond with the protein fiber, the water content breaks free leaving a breathing space for natural transpiration. The fat plumps the leather with fullness preventing the leather structure from collapsing during compressing and flexing while the oil lubricates the fiber from sliding smoothly over one another like millions of connecting hinges. Protector-B+ impart a non-stick, rub-resistant surface with a buttery feel helps reduce friction wear to the topcoat and extended a high level of appearance for a longer period of time. When the leather is contaminated with foreign soiling, it is essential to look at topcoat refinishing in a holistic approach. Note that the cleaning and rejuvenating products suffix denotes its pH value in this leather-safe aniline leathers topcoat refinishing system.

Leather Doctor Kit A7.cl – Aniline Leather Dye Refinishing Kit
Leather Doctor® Kit A7.cl, aniline leather dye refinishing kit is designed for dyestuff and topcoat refinishing from the simple sunlight fading to the severely sweat damages from body oil and grease. Most severely penetrated, prolonged and neglected stains show a darkening effect with a sticky feel have its topcoat and dyestuff probably deteriorated by the sweat. When the stain feels sticky, it is a sign of leather denaturing and reverting to rawhide from breaking of bonds with the tanning agent. When sign of color is transfer to a white towel, it indicates that the dyestuff has also break bonds with the protein fiber. When leather is stiff or show signs of whitish residue migrating, it shows that the fatliquor is breaking bonds as well with the protein fiber. The main component of the leather protein fiber is amphoteric while the other constituents are not; shifting of the pH mainly caused from sweat to alkalinity affects the pH imbalance. To revert from denaturing into rawhide prior to topcoat refinishing, contaminated alkaline soiling is removed with Degreaser-2.2, a waterbased (pH 2.2) multifunctional degreaser that emulsifies greasy contamination besides controlling dye bleeding and charging the protein fiber ionic positive for strengthening the attraction between the ionic negative tanning agent, dyestuff and fatliquor. Deflocculated and suspended soiling is towel extracted, thereafter rinse and pH balanced with Acidifier-2.0 to prevent the leather from reverting to rawhide. When leather feels sticky or slimy it is a sign of leather denaturing, a squeaky feel when wet is a sign of a healthy leather. Hydrator-3.3 relaxes stiff leathers and removes surface tension free from surface blotchiness prior to fat and oil replenishing. Fat and oil is replenished with Fatliquor-5.0 to rejuvenate the leather for the desired suppleness when dry. Custom redyeing commences prior to topcoat refinishing. Protector-B+ imparts a non-stick rub-resistant protection with a buttery-feel that shield against sticky soiling and reduce friction noises. Note that the mentioned product suffix number denotes its pH value in this holistic leather-safe aniline leathers dyestuff and topcoat refinishing system.
