View Full Version : Antique pipe case keeps leaking oil or grime?

I own an antique 1900s sterling silver overlayed amber pipe, and it has its original leather/hide case.

The tissue paper it was in has absorbed a disturbing amount of oil or grease from the case.

What is it, and how do I care for the case so it stops leaking? What can I condition it with or how do I clean it!

I've never handled this problem before, only antique and vintage crocodile and alligator skinned items.

Are you talking about cleaning the green velvet lining?

Oil or grease can be degreased with Degreaser-2.2 > Rinse-3.0

I apoogize for the late reply!

I'd love to know how to care for the green lining and the leather outside. So far the outside does not mark my fingers or feel soft or oily, however the tissue paper it was in had turned brown and was saturated.

Here are photos I took today.

The inside will first need to be degreased with Degreaser-2.2 > Rinse-3.0 as already mentioned above.

The care of the leather outside - do you want a repair and refinishing or just a regular cleaning or a restorative cleaning?

Thanks!

As for the former, I was thinking of a regular clean, nothing too invasive.

Take a look at the Faux Suede Care Guide.
You may pick your system of cleaning that matches the soiling level or stain type accordingly.

Thanks! I'll be trying my clean mission this week. And I plan to take before & after progress shots!
