Roger, We need to restore this aniline sofa. We cleaned it several months ago, and it improved, but now she would like it dyed. Not sure if we should use covering aniline dye or Antique. The leather looks more tired and dark in some areas than the pictures show.

Roger, I need a refresher to make sure I understand your dyes.

Aniline 21, Pure aniline to add color on faded aniline. will not hide any damage. Will not fully restore severely faded leather.
apply to clean hydrated and fatliquored leather. Top coat with Aniline 21

Aniline 76, Aniline with the ability to slightly hide some minor imperfections. Can restore severely faded leather.
apply to clean hydrated and fatliquored leather. top coat with Aniline 76

Antique 22, Opaque micro pigment, for restoring semi aniline leathers. Shows more depth and tone than Micro 54. Has the ability to hide more imperfections and damage. Can repair severely faded leather.
apply to clean hydrated and fatliquored leather. But need to apply Adhesion 73 prior to applying dye top coat with Micro Top 54

Micro-54, Fine pigment used to cover damage and fading on semi aniline leathers and pigmented leathers. Can cover almost any damage. Light coats can be used to for semi aniline repair. If multiple coats leather becomes pigmented.
Apply to clean hydrated and fatliquored leather. Must apply adhesion and top coat with Micor top 54.

Antique 22 I meant to say translucent, not opaque.

>>> Aniline 21, Pure aniline to add color on faded aniline. will not hide any damage.
apply to clean hydrated and fatliquored leather. Topcoat with Aniline 21
Aniline leathers means that they are dyed with aniline dyestuff.

When comes to re-dyeing it is the topcoat that may interfere with the re-dyeing process as dyestuff need to hydrogen bond with the protein fiber at the molecular level. Therefore almost most of the topcoating or fixes have to be stripped (Stripper-2.3) prior to have direct access to the naked protein fiber otherwise blotchiness is the common phenomenon, with poor result. In such situation a heavier aniline dyestuff such as Aniline-76 will coats it over the exiting topcoats.

>>> Will not fully restore severely faded leather.

If the leather is of the pure-aniline types using a “non-film forming” topcoat or fixes such as AnilineTop-21N redyeing severely faded leather is not a problem. However the sequence of redyeing is prior to leather rejuvenating it in this sequence.
A – Restorative Cleaning
B – Re-dyeing with Aniline-21
C – Leather Rejuvenating with Hydrator-3.3 > Fatliquor-5.0 Hydrator-3.3 system.
D – Topcoating or Fixes.
E – Protection

Note: You may forget about using Aniline-21 for smooth leather upholstery, as there are rarely any pure-aniline. Perhaps glazed aniline. Although some topcoat or fixes may be non film forming types it may still interfere with direct staining the leather crust. Pure-aniline are found in high-end garments and bags. Only used for nubuck and suede as an option for pure transparency besides the choice of the “translucent” Nubuck-28.

>>> Aniline 76, Aniline with the ability to slightly hide some minor imperfections. Can restore severely faded leather.
apply to clean hydrated and fatliquored leather. top coat with Aniline 76.

Although it has a heavier surface coating rather than staining the protein fiber with Aniline-21, it is still transparent and in order to slightly hide some minor imperfection will need to increase its intensity to a darker shade.

Rather Antique-27 is a translucent dyestuff for restoring the antiquing effect of most pigmented leathers.

Micro-54 is developed for semi-aniline leathers to impart a fine coating sufficiently to improve appearance for semi-aniline leathers. When use on heavy pigmented leathers a 10% Thickener-48 to the mix increases its viscosity and helps to reduce coating for coverage.

Most of soiling especially the greasy and oily types penetrates the leather and goes below surface. The only effective way is to degrease it with Degreaser-2.2 > Acidifier-2.0 for the surface and Hydrator-3.3 for below surface. Until it is perfectly clean otherwise it may interfere with the re-dyeing process.

>>> Not sure if we should use covering aniline dye or Antique.

Aniline-21 or Aniline-76 are both transparent dyestuff, Aniline-21 will need a completely stripped free of topcoating or fixes prior to staining it. Aniline-76 of the same color may used as a double up to improve coverage or appearance thus making the finishes heavier in comparison to just by Aniline-21. Beauty and blemishes will still show through equally, therefore if there are blemishes the choice is to go darker in shade.
Antique-27 is a translucent hybrid and reduces the beauty of the grain as well as the blemishes. Thus it is not necessary to go into a darker shade to camouflage the unwanted blemishes.

Note:
In both transparent and translucent dyestuff, what you see is not what you get and each additional coating will increase the color intensity very drastically. The only control is the adjustment of the dyestuff with Aniline-21 Clear-700 to determine the deepest intensity the dyestuff may result.

When using an opaque pigment like Micro-54, what you see is what you get. However, it cheapens the value of the leather drastically.

Explain to your customer that the best suggestion is to go dark to cover existing stubborn staining. Thus the color matching is not the original color but the darkest stain still remaining after restorative cleaning.

I was thinking about ordering 1 quart Aniline -76 and 1 quart Antique-22. Do you think this would be a good idea?

It depends on how you would like to take up the challenge.

Using transparent and translucent dyestuff “what you see is not you get” unlike using the opaque coloring like Micro-54.

Points to consider:
Since they are transparent and translucent the beauty and blemishes will still see through.
In order to camouflage the blemishes or remaining stains the color intensity has to be deeper to do so to an acceptable point and stop at there otherwise it may go deeper than desired.

Thorough stain removal will therefore help to ease out the uneven appearance that will otherwise still show through and moves the color intensity to the maximum.

Maximum color intensity can be pre-adjusted with Aniline-76 Clear. This allows you to set the maximum color intensity and setting the limit.

Another consideration is the translucent and the transparent does not look exactly the same when compare that gives them the difference in appearance as well. However, Aniline-76 and Antique-27 are intermixable to give a range and is also works with Aniline-76 Clear to adjust the desired maximum color intensity.

Please approve and pay Invoice 11-0397 and it will be out.

Here is an example of the color intensity can be achieve from the same bottle.

4111

Aniline transparent dyestuff color intensity from the bottle is “what you see is NOT what you get” unlike the opaque Micro-54 color pigment. The see-through color intensity increases with additional coating. As seen from the above picture example it produces 4 shades or color intensity from top to bottom and the luster level from left to right. Aniline-76 Clear is used to reduce or control color intensity by mixing with the color dyestuff to maximize out the color intensity prior to application.

Roger, the dye came in but appears to be way too dark. How should we proceed to dilute it?

Use Aniline-76 (Clear-700) to dilute or thin down the color intensity for both Aniline-76 and Antique-27.

Do a test and determine their ratio mix that matches the darkest remaining stains and do a testing that it can camouflage it by the sides.

Unwanted testing clean up is done with Stripper-2.3.

Roger, I just heard form this customer, she stated that she is sticking to this leather and the cushions stick to each other. I think we used Aniline Top76S but it's possible that we used aniline 76 clear by mistake. And I'm sure we didn't use Protector B+, because we usually wait until it cures overnight and we performed this job in her house. I haven't heard form her since it was completed so I assumed that it was fine.

>>> I just heard form this customer; she stated that she is sticking to this leather and the cushions stick to each other. I think we used AnilineTop-76S but it's possible that we used Aniline-76Clear by mistake.

Without this topcoat, the color basecoat would be: a) poor in aesthetics such as appearance and feel; b) susceptible to sticking together or attracting loose dust and dye especially in hot humid condition; c) poor physical properties such as wet rub, sweat resistant and scuff resistant; d) poor in ageing properties such as soil resistant and wet cleaning resistant.

Protector-B+ the leather scented version is a non-film forming, non-stick, rub-resistant protector and further helps against sticky feeling of touch.

1 – Soiling may need to be removed first.
2 – Acidifier-2.0 used as rinse will help rectify to a healthy squeaky-feel.
3 – Dry etching prior to AnilineTop-76S helps for better adhesion.
4 – Only when tackiness persist with inspection that Crosslinker-25 up to 10% is added by weight to the AnilineTop-76S and only is used as the final resort as it becomes uncoatable after that.
5 – Protector-B+ finishes off the refinishing.

What do you think or at what level you wish to correct it?
